BNSF delays fuel surcharge program changes

Citing volatility in fuel markets, BNSF Railway Co. yesterday announced it’s postponing fuel surcharge changes that had been scheduled to take effect in January and February.

The changes would have extended the Class I’s mileage-based fuel surcharge program and increased the strike price on carload shipments from $1.25 to $2.50 per gallon of Highway Diesel Fuel (HDF). Under the program, BNSF assesses a fuel surcharge based on the rail miles rather than highway miles between an origin and destination.

“We will continue to monitor the state of the fuel markets as the year progresses and provide an update no later than July 1, 2009,” BNSF officials said in a prepared statement.
