BNSF boots up software to streamline fuel management processes

With diesel costs top-of-mind because of skyrocketing crude oil prices, Class Is are doing all they can to reduce fuel expenses. BNSF Railway Co. recently began using FuelQuest’s Fuel Management System™ (FSM) and ZyTax™ software to streamline fuel management processes.

The railroad, which purchases 1.5 billion gallons of diesel annually, will use the software to electronically manage and simplify fuel inventory, procurement, delivery and financial processes to reduce paperwork and workloads. FSM and ZyTax can automate fuel supply-chain processes, electronically determine fuel excise taxes and ease fuel invoice reconciliation.

“With volatility high and fuel prices at a premium, BNSF is looking for every possibility to reduce our overall fuel spend, and a key objective is ensuring that fuel contract pricing is strictly adhered to,” said BNSF Director of Fuel Management Casey Gourley in a prepared statement.
