Car orders down, deliveries up in 2Q, ARCI says

In the second quarter, rail-car orders totaled 16,900 units, down from 36,903 units ordered in the first quarter, but up from 4,886 units ordered in second-quarter 2010, according to the Railway Supply Institute’s American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee.

Second-quarter car deliveries reached 10,605 units compared with 7,648 in the first quarter, 7,333 in fourth-quarter 2010, 3,706 in third-quarter 2010 and 2,946 in second-quarter 2010.

On July 1, the rail-car backlog stood at 57,308 vs. 51,913 on April 1, 22,658 on Dec. 31, 2010, and 19,267 on Oct. 1, 2010, according to ARCI.
