PANYNJ completes rail-car fleet replacement

Yesterday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) completed the replacement of its 340-car fleet when the final new seven-car train entered service on the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH).
The new train began operating after a ceremony at the Hoboken PATH station marked the completion of a three-year, $744 million project aimed at replacing old cars, some of which were built in the 1960s, PANYNJ officials said in a prepared statement. The new cars were designed and manufactured by Kawasaki Rail Car Corp.
“The new trains highlight the port authority’s commitment to PATH, and this milestone — delivered under budget — is just one component of a multi-billion dollar investment in the system,” said PANYNJ Chairman David Samson.
The next major project on the agenda: a $400 million computerized signal system to replace antiquated mechanized signals, port authority officials said. Other planned improvements include a complete renovation of Harrison Station.
