Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad unveiled the first of 60 new environmentally friendly "Generator-Set” locomotives the Class I plans to use at its Los Angeles Basin yards.

Built by National Railway Equipment Co. (NREC), the 2,100-horsepower locomotives feature three 700-horsepower diesel engines designed to reduce nitrous oxides and particulate matter emissions up to 80 percent, and cut fuel usage up to 16 percent compared with conventional low-horsepower locomotives. NREC will deliver the remaining 59 Gen-Set units during the next six months.

The locomotives will replace 95 older low-horsepower switchers used at the L.A.-area yards. UP began testing Gen-Set locomotives in 2002.
