Los Angeles Junction Railway to test RailPower's Green Goat switcher

On Jan. 9, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced Burlington Northern Santa Fe subsidiary Los Angeles Junction Railway Co. has begun a 30-day lease/trial of the Green Goat® — the fourth railroad and second short line to test the 2,000-horsepower hybrid locomotive.

"Los Angeles Junction is an ideal location for this trial as this is a highly productive yard at a major terminus," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement.

Featuring a 130-horsepower diesel generator and long-life, recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and diesel-particulate emissions 80 percent to 90 percent, and fuel consumption, about 50 percent to 80 percent, compared with a conventional switcher. RailPower also markets the Green Kid®, a 1,000-horsepower hybrid locomotive.

Last year, Union Pacific Railroad and Pacific Harbor Line Inc. tested Green Goats. Next month, Canadian Pacific Railway expects to begin testing a unit for 90 days in various winter operating conditions at its Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and Coquitlam, British Columbia, yards.

Also, Chevron Products Co. tested a Green Kid at its El Segundo, Calif., refinery late last year.
