On Nov. 7, Canadian National Railway Co. announced plans to build a second series of 100 box cars at its Transcona Shops beginning in first-quarter 2004. The first 100-car batch is expected to be completed by year end at the shops located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"This is the first car construction program at CN's Transcona shops in several years," said Sameh Fahmy, CN vice president of engineering, mechanical and supply management in a prepared statement. "CN decided to build the second 100-car batch to bring [our] fleet up to the required size."

CN plans to use the 58-foot, 286,000-pound capacity, Plate F box cars to move high-quality paper products. The second 100-car series is expected to be completed by April.
