Rail-car orders slipped, deliveries rose slightly in 3Q, ARCI says

In the third quarter, rail-car orders totaled 12,753 units compared with 14,850 units in the second quarter and 23,901 units in the first quarter, according to the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute. Orders reached 15,151 units in third-quarter 2012.

Rail-car deliveries in the third quarter climbed to 12,647 units, slightly besting the second quarter's 12,511 units and first quarter's 11,952 units. Deliveries totaled 12,346 units in third-quarter 2012.

Meanwhile, the backlog as of Oct. 1 stood at 73,848 cars compared with 73,706 cars on July 1, 71,704 cars on April 1 and 60,244 cars on Dec. 31, 2012, ARCI data shows.
