RailPower gains Green Goat order from business partner CANAC

It didn't take long for RailPower Technologies Corp. to obtain another order for its hybrid locomotives. Two days after receiving an order from Railserve Inc. for six Green Kids™ and one Green Goat™, RailPower on Jan. 16 announced the company obtained an order from CANAC Inc. for two Green Goats.

CANAC plans to use the 2,000-horsepower locomotives — which, similar to Railserve's seven units, will be subsidized by the Texas Emissions Reduction Program (TERP) — to replace diesel power used in industrial operations in Harris County, Texas.

"Texas is very actively addressing mobile sources of noxious emissions with its TERP program," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement, adding that his company expects Texas to approve other TERP applications in the coming months.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats and 1,000-horsepower Green Kids are designed to reduce NOx and diesel-particulate emissions 80 percent to 90 percent, and fuel consumption, about 50 percent to 80 percent, compared with a conventional switcher.

"We have not only considered the incentives and the emissions reductions in this purchase, but also the future positive impact of operating these hybrids that will deliver substantial cost savings on fuel and maintenance," said CANAC President and CEO Frank Trotter. "We expect to pursue additional emissions incentive programs to add more hybrids to our fleet."

In September 2003, CANAC and RailPower agreed to jointly develop and market the hybrid switchers to North American and international markets.

RailPower plans to integrate CANAC's BELTPACK® locomotive remote-control system into Green Goats and Kids, and offer CANAC products and services to RailPower customers; CANAC will supply remote-control systems to RailPower's industrial customers on an Original Equipment Manufacturing basis.
