TransLink last week received the first of its 12-train order scheduled to enter service early next year on the SkyTrain Canada Line in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The remaining two-car trains will be shipped by Hyundai Rotem in South Korea and arrive throughout the year and into early 2020, TransLink officials said in a press release.

The trains will undergo testing before entering service. Once in service, the trains will increase passenger capacity on the line by 25 percent, official said.

To accommodate the anticipated service increase, TransLink is installing new escalators at the Yaletown-Roundhouse, Vancouver City Centre and Waterfront stations.

In addition, TransLink announced it will complete upgrades to its operations and maintenance center by summer's end. The new facility will include four tracks, a driveway, automatic train control and power and communications.

The fleet expansion, station upgrades and operations and maintenance center update is part of a $123 million investment into the system. The projects are funded by the Canadian government, provincial government and TransLink.
