The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) last week announced it will retire its legacy streetcars late next month to make way for 204 new, low-floor streetcars from Bombardier Inc.
To commemorate the legacy fleet, two streetcars will make a final run of service Dec. 29 between Bathurst Street and Greenwood Avenue in Toronto.
The first of the legacy fleet arrived to TTC on Dec. 29, 1977, and entered into service on Sept. 20, 1979. The final streetcars of the 196 streetcar-order were delivered in 1982, TTC officials said in a press release.
Later, TTC ordered 52 additional articulated light-rail vehicle streetcars, which were double the length of the original streetcars. That fleet was retired in September.
The fleet replacement marks the first time TTC’s entire streetcar and bus routes will be serviced by accessible vehicles, officials said.
