American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) builders delivered 10,824 rail cars in first-quarter 2020, down from 13,171 units during the same period a year ago, the Railway Supply Institute's ARCI Committee announced last week.

Rail cars delivered during Q1 declined from fourth-quarter 2019, when 14,727 units were delivered.

The number of rail cars ordered in the first quarter declined to 6,172 units, compared with 9,663 units during the same period in 2019. Orders at the end of Q4 2019 were 8,464 units.

Meanwhile, the rail-car backlog stood at 46,330 units as of April 1, down from 51,295 units on Dec. 31, 2019.
