Yesterday, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it lined up another buyer for its Green Kid® hybrid locomotive. Intermodal yard operator IDC Distribution Services Ltd. will purchase one of the 2,000-horsepower switchers featuring CANAC Inc.'s BELTPACK® remote-control technology.

IDC plans to use the Green Goat at its new intermodal yard that's scheduled to open in August near Vancouver, B.C. The switcher will load and unload containers arriving and departing from the Fraser Surrey Docks, which is owned by the Fraser River Port Authority.

"Our locomotive design fits in well with [IDC's] operating arrangements, given its features of low emissions and quiet operation," said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce NOx and other emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and fuel use about 50 percent compared with a conventional switcher.

RailPower currently has 13 Green Goats on order, including recent agreements with two undisclosed Class Is to separately lease and operate a unit for five years in California's San Joaquin Valley and Los Angeles Harbor area.
