Wabtec Corp. recently modernized a CN Dash 9 locomotive in what is the first of 50 units the Class I has ordered to be overhauled at Wabtec's plant in Fort Worth, Texas.
Built by Wabtec in 2000, the locomotive had hauled about 20 million tons of freight across 2 million miles over the past 22 years. But despite the mileage and weathered look, the locomotive was not yet ready for retirement.
After several weeks, the 430,000-pound locomotive emerged from the factory ready for another long-term tour of duty in CN's fleet, Wabtec officials said in an article posted on the company's website.
"These modernizations are customized to reflect CN operational strategies and sustainability goals," said Pascal Schweitzer, president of Wabtec's freight services.
Wabtec converted the locomotive from a DC propulsion system to modern-day AC propulsion. Additionally, Wabtec upgraded the control systems and implemented an engine upgrade with its FDL Advantage program.
The upgrades are expected to enhance fuel efficiency by more than 17%, improve reliability by 30% and increase haulage ability by more than 55%. The upgrades reduce the locomotive’s emissions and operating costs, Wabtec officials said.
