Yesterday, RailPower Technologies Corp. announced it will build nine Green Goat® hybrid locomotives for two railroads and a shipper that recently received clean air grants from the state of Texas.

The company will produce six Green Goats for Kansas City Southern, two for Fort Worth & Western Railroad Co. and one for Lubrizol Corp. Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and long-life recyclable batteries, Green Goats are designed to reduce air emissions 50 percent to 80 percent, and cut fuel usage about 50 percent compared with conventional switchers.

RailPower produces Green Goat and Green Kid® locomotives at plants in Calgary, Alberta; Boise, Idaho; and Longview, Texas. Early next year, the company will begin building the locomotives at a Schenectady, N.Y., facility as well as start producing two multi-engine road switchers at other plants.

“[These transactions] add another nine units to our current order book, bringing the total to 184, and takes us even further into production year 2007,” said RailPower President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Maier in a prepared statement.

RailPower also announced it appointed Philip Garcia to its board. Last month, director Robert Krebs resigned from the board for personal reasons. Garcia — who will serve on the board’s audit committee — is executive vice president and chief financial officer of Erie Insurance Group.
