American Railcar Industries sets fourth-quarter car delivery record, doubles year-end backlog

American Railcar Industries Inc. (ARI) capped off 2005 with a car delivery record. During the fourth quarter, the freight-car builder delivered an all-time-high 1,895 cars (1,481 covered hoppers and 414 tank cars), a 69 percent increase compared with fourth-quarter 2004.

On Dec. 31, ARI’s backlog of unfilled orders stood at 14,510 cars — nearly double its 7,547-car backlog on Dec. 31, 2004.

During the full year, the company delivered 4,240 covered hoppers, 1,850 tank cars and 785 centerbeam platforms for a total of 6,875 units, a 57 percent increase compared with 2004.

ARI also posted gains in its quarterly and annual financials. During the fourth quarter, the company generated revenue of $166 million, a nearly 60 percent rise compared with the same 2004 period. The car builder earned net income of $236,000 compared with a $952,000 net loss in fourth-quarter 2004.

During 2005, ARI’s revenue totaling $608.1 million rose 71 percent compared with 2004. The company earned net income of $14.8 million, a more than 700 percent increase compared with 2004 income of $1.9 million.

In addition to producing freight cars, ARI repairs and refurbishes cars, provides fleet management services, and supplies car and industrial components.
