AAR approves New York Air Brake's pneumatic system

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) recently granted New York Air Brake Corp. (NYAB) conditional approval for its EP-60 electronically controlled pneumatic brake system, which meets AAR's S-4200 specification.

Trains equipped with the system demonstrate faster brake response and better train handling because each rail car features graduated application/release and load-compensated braking, NYAB officials said in a prepared statement. Targeted at long, heavy-haul trains, the EP-60 is designed to reduce fuel usage, car lading damage, and wheel, shoe and draft gear wear.

NYAB has logged millions of car miles during revenue service to test the system, including trials on Quebec Cartier Mining Co.'s iron-ore cars.

Part of the Knorr-Bremse Group, NYAB supplies air-brake and train-control systems to the worldwide heavy-haul railroad industry.
