ARCI: Car orders, deliveries fell in fourth quarter

Rail-car orders in fourth-quarter 2016 totaled 4,866 units compared with 5,526 units in the third quarter and 9,169 units in fourth-quarter 2015, according to quarterly statistics released last week by the Railway Supply Institute's American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI).

Car deliveries in Q4 2016 fell to 14,914 units from 15,375 units in Q3. Deliveries for Q2 and Q1 came in at 15,655 units and 16,834 units, respectively.

In Q4 2015, deliveries totaled 20,296 units.

Meanwhile, the rail-car backlog stood at 66,681 units as of Dec. 31, 2016. That compares with 77,640 on Oct. 1, 2016; 89,155 on July 1, 2016; and 95,038 on April 1, 2016, according to ARCI data.
