ARCI: Rail-car deliveries up, orders down in 4Q

In fourth-quarter 2011, rail-car orders dipped to 16,434 units compared with 20,165 in the third quarter, 16,900 in the second quarter and 36,903 in the first quarter, according to the American Railway Car Institute (ARCI) Committee of the Railway Supply Institute Inc. However, car deliveries climbed to 16,693 versus 12,519 in the third quarter, 10,605 in the second quarter and 7,648 in the first quarter. In fourth-quarter 2010, car orders totaled 10,853 units and deliveries totaled 7,333 units.

For all of 2011, car orders reached 90,402 units compared with 29,992 in 2010, 8,336 in 2009, 33,235 in 2008 and 53,584 in 2007. Car deliveries in 2011 totaled 47,465 units compared with 16,535 in 2010, 21,682 in 2009, 59,954 in 2008 and 63,156 in 2007.

ARCI reports that the rail-car backlog stood at 64,575 units on Dec. 31, 2011, versus 65,044 units on Oct. 1, 2011; 57,308 units on July 1, 2011; and 51,913 units on April 1, 2011.
