ARCI: Rail-car orders and deliveries rose in 4Q

In fourth-quarter 2013, rail-car orders totaled 14,865 units compared with 12,753 units in the third quarter, 14,850 units in the second quarter and 23,901 units in the first quarter of 2013, according to the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute. Orders totaled 11,066 units in fourth-quarter 2012.

Rail-car deliveries in fourth-quarter 2013 climbed to 15,776 units, besting the third quarter's 12,647 units, second quarter's 12,511 units and first quarter's 11,952 units, ARCI data shows. Deliveries totaled 11,815 units in fourth-quarter 2012.

Meanwhile, the car backlog as of Dec. 31, 2013, stood at 72,937 units versus 73,848 units on Oct. 1, 2013, 73,706 units on July 1, 2013, 71,704 cars on April 1, 2013, and 60,244 cars on Dec. 31, 2012.
