ARCI: Rail-car orders dipped a bit, deliveries rose a skosh in Q4

Rail-car orders totaled 37,431 units in fourth-quarter 2014, down from 42,900 units in the third quarter but way up versus 14,865 units in fourth-quarter 2013, according to the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute.

Car deliveries in the fourth quarter reached 18,941 units compared with 18,432 in the third quarter, 16,056 in the second quarter, 13,954 in the first quarter and 15,776 in fourth-quarter 2013. The car backlog as of Dec. 31, 2014, soared to 142,837 units versus 124,437 on Oct. 1, 2014, 99,782 on July 1, 2014, and 81,927 on April 1, 2014.

ARCI stats for the full year show orders totaled 138,293 units compared with 66,569 in 2013, 55,046 in 2012, 89,073 in 2011 and 29,992 in 2010. Deliveries totaled 67,383 units versus 53,050 in 2013, 58,904 in 2012, 47,350 in 2011 and 16,535 in 2010.
