During the second quarter, rail-car orders totaled 18,190 units, a nearly 50 percent drop compared with the previous quarter and the first quarter-over-quarter loss since third-quarter 2005, according to the American Railway Car Institute Committee of the Railway Supply Institute. Orders also declined 6 percent compared with second-quarter 2005.

However, deliveries increased for the third-straight quarter. Totaling 19,466 units, second-quarter deliveries rose 5 percent compared with the first quarter and 8.5 percent compared with second-quarter 2005.

Meanwhile, the car backlog as of July 1 totaled 85,692 units, a slight decline compared with the 86,857-unit backlog on April 1 but a 25 percent rise compared with the 60,544-unit backlog on July 1, 2005.
