BNSF awards contract to Georgetown Rail for dump-car conversion kits

Georgetown Rail Equipment Co. (GREX) recently obtained a contract from Burlington Northern Santa Fe to provide 25 Hydra Dump hydraulic conversion kits. The supplier plans to deliver the kits by September.

The kits will enable the railroad to convert air-operated dump cars to hydraulic-operated side-dumping cars. Hydra Dump kits offer better control, and enhanced durability and safety compared with typical air-dumping systems, according to a GREX statement. Using standard components, the kits are designed to enable a car's dumping mechanism to operate from locomotive auxiliary air and dump loads exceeding 100 tons.

During the past three years, BNSF has converted 57 cars with Hydra Dump kits.
