BNSF Railway Co. recently agreed to lease five Green Goat® locomotives from RailPower Technologies Corp. for five years. The Class I now will obtain a total of 10 Green Goats from the locomotive builder.

RailPower will use emissions grants from a San JoaquinValley Air Pollution Control District incentive program to build the five hybrid switchers.

“These units will replace 1960s locomotive technology with current technology that provides both improved reliability and significantly lower exhaust emissions,” said Mark Stehly, BNSF assistant vice president of environmental, research and development, in a prepared statement.

To date, RailPower has received orders for 90 Green Goats and Green Kids®. The company has delivered nine units so far in 2005 and currently is building 15 units.

RailPower also recently sold a Green Kid to fertilizer and nitrogen shipper Agrium Inc., which had been testing the leased unit at its Redwater, Alberta, facility.

Featuring 130-horsepower diesel generators and recyclable batteries, the 2,000-horsepower Green Goat and 1,000-horsepower Green Kid are designed to reduce emissions about 90 percent, and cut fuel usage between 50 percent and 80 percent compared with a conventional switcher.
