Bombardier enters passenger vehicle spare parts market

Yesterday, Bombardier Transportation announced plans to expand its North American rail services business by supplying and managing passenger-rail vehicle parts.

The car builder aims to improve supply-chain management of spare parts by providing a private brand of replacement parts for every make of passenger cars and locomotives, developing a distribution network and offering a large inventory of remanufactured spare parts.

The product line expansion is an extension of Bombardier’s life-cycle approach to fleet management that focuses on post-purchase rail services, such as operations, maintenance, refurbishment and inventory management, according to a prepared statement.

"This aspect of the rail business doesn’t get a great deal of attention even though it is absolutely critical to the operating effectiveness and cost efficiency of transit systems around the continent," said Bombardier General Manager of Material Solutions Keith Sheardown.
