Rail News: Mechanical
Today, VIA Rail Canada Inc. announced it awarded a five-year, $100 million contract to Global Railway Industries Ltd. subsidiary CAD Railway Industries Ltd. to rebuild its fleet of F-40 locomotives. The rehab program is part of the Canadian government’s recently announced passenger-rail capital investment plan.
The locomotives account for 70 percent of VIA Rail’s locomotive fleet. This month, CAD Railway will begin repairing carbodies and inspecting locomotive components. The company will install new components designed to meet today’s environmental and safety standards, VIA Rail said.
The first of the rebuilt locomotives are scheduled to be delivered in March 2009. VIA Rail expects to complete the entire program by 2012.
