CSX yesterday announced it unveiled a new addition to its responder incident training (RIT) program — the training locomotive CSXT 911343.
The specialized unit is designed to simulate real-world scenarios to offer first responders hands-on experience to prepare for potential railroad incidents, according to a CSX press release.
Previously a wide-body SD70 locomotive, the CSXT 911343 has been converted into a dedicated training asset for the RIT program. It will be used to replicate incidents commonly encountered in railroad emergencies, such as engine compartment fires and crew rescue scenarios.
Modifications to the locomotive include several custom features to enhance safety and facilitate training scenarios, CSX officials said.
"For example, the fuel tank carries 4,900 gallons of water instead of actual fuel," explained Derik Skeens, plant manager at the Huntington Locomotive Shop. "We’ve designed 10 different simulations — such as leaks and punctures — that mimic potential fuel tank issues encountered during rail-related incidents.”
The training locomotive will make its debut at CSX’s in-person RIT session in Baldwin, Florida, Feb. 11-13. CSX created this video about the new unit.
