California rail authority awards contract to rebuild rail cars for Metrolink

The Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) has awarded a $138.9 million contract to a Talgo-SYSTRA joint venture to rebuild 121 Bombardier rail cars used by Metrolink.

The base order is for 50 cars, which will be increased by 71 cars if funding becomes available, according to a Talgo press release.

Overhaul work will be performed at Talgo's plant in Milwaukee. Delivery of the first cars to Metrolink expected 450 days after the notice to proceed. After the first 10 cars are received, Metrolink expects delivery of five cars per every 90 days, with the final car slated for delivery in April 2023.

SCRRA issued a request for proposals in April for the rail-car overhaul to improve the reliability and appearance of the authority's existing fleet. The scope of the work includes updating the control voltage and battery system, lighting, trucks, passenger communication system, restroom remodeling and overhauling the HVAC systems.

In addition, crews will update door operators and controls, repaint the exterior, provide new seat cushions and coverings, and install new floor covering.
