EMD retools old CPR locomotive into a 'Repower' unit

An old Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive now has a new life as environmentally friendly motive power. Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD) recently repowered the 54-year-old EMD GP9, created a 710ECO™ Repower locomotive and delivered the unit to a Class I railroad for long-term testing in revenue service.
The 710ECO™ Repower is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 70 percent — better than the U.S. Environmental protection Agency's Tier 2 standards, EMD said — and cut fuel usage up to 25 percent compared with a conventional locomotive. The Repower unit enables railroads to update older yard and road switchers with the latest microprocessor-controlled locomotive-engine technology to boost reliability, increase serviceability and control maintenance costs, EMD said.
The 710ECO™ Repower features an eight-cylinder, 2,000-horsepower or 12-cylinder, 3,000-horsepower EMD diesel engine and EM2000 microprocessor-control system. Unlike a GenSet locomotive, the 710ECO™ Repower can operate continuously at maximum-rated horsepower, EMD said.
