Four Class Is contract ALK Technologies to help determine mileage-based fuel surcharges

ALK Technologies recently obtained contracts from BNSF Railway Co., Canadian National Railway Co., CSX Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad to provide software that will help the Class Is determine mileage-based fuel surcharges and comply with a Surface Transportation Board (STB) rule.

The railroads will use ALK’s PC*MILER|Rail routing, mileage and mapping software to determine rates, audit rail-car mileage and calculate other information. The software is designed to determine rail-specific mileage within the North American rail network, generate routes based on multi-carrier routing options and issue detailed route reports listing railroad mileage. ALK’s rail network comprises about 50,000 freight stations and 3,400 junction interchanges for 699 railroads.

To take affect April 26, the STB rule requires railroads to assess fuel surcharges based on mileage and not a percentage of the freight rate.
