On Dec. 5, The Greenbrier Cos. plans to decrease rail-car production at its TrentonWorks plant in Nova Scotia, Canada, to a one-line operation and lay off about 400 employees.
The reduction is part of a continuing effort to shift car production to U.S. and Mexican plants, which have lower cost structures, greater operating and work rules flexibility, and favorable foreign currency exchange rates, according to a prepared statement.
Greenbrier builds freight cars in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and repairs and refurbishes cars and wheels at 17 North American locations. The company also builds and refurbishes cars in Europe.
