The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas (METRO) is marking four million miles traveled or 100 million boardings on its 18 light-rail vehicles.
The Houston agency reached the milestone four years of ahead of schedule, METRO officials said in a press release. To honor the occasion, the agency will offer free rides tomorrow, the same day it will introduce the first two Siemens S70 H2 rail cars into service at the University of Houston-Downtown Station.
"These two new rail cars will be joined by another 17 new Siemens H2 rail cars over the next year," said Tom Lambert, METRO's interim president and chief executive officer.
The milestone "demonstrates that rail is a critical component to successful transit in the region," said METRO Chairman Gilbert Garcia.
