Rail News: Mechanical
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Inc.’s (IEEE) Vehicular Technology Society recently began developing a new transit-rail industry standard entitled “Guide for the Calculation of Braking Distances for Rail Transit Vehicles,” or IEEE P1698™.
The standard will encompass automatic train protection and signal system operation, as well as propulsion and brake system operation, environmental conditions, operator interfaces, tolerances and failure modes. IEEE officials believe the guide will serve as a reference tool during the design of transit-rail vehicle automatic train protection and signal systems, and procurement and maintenance of transit vehicles and train-control equipment.
