Rail News: Mechanical

In with the new: More cars, locomotives display BNSF's latest logo

It’s taken months, but hundreds of rail cars now sport BNSF Railway Co.’s new logo. By year’s end, hundreds more box, coal, tank, cement, coil steel and intermodal double-stack cars, and gondolas will feature the black-and-orange or white-reversed designs the railroad unveiled in January.

Although all new cars display the new logo, the Class I will apply the logo on older cars as they’re repainted.

“We’ve had great cooperation from our rail-car manufacturers, decal vendors and car shops in creating prototypes and then helping us find the best applications of the logo,” said BNSF Director of Mechanical Engineering Pat Whelan in a prepared statement.

BNSF also is making progress with applying the new logo, and orange, black and yellow paint scheme on locomotives. To date, more than 100 units feature the logo and scheme. In addition, more than 500 new highway vehicles — which BNSF is adding to its fleet this year — will sport the new logo by Dec. 31.
