KCS promotes Hadel to manage asset utilization — especially use of end-of-train devices

Kansas City Southern recently promoted Tom Hadel from terminal superintendent in Shreveport, La., to assistant chief mechanical officer, asset utilization. He serves as a liaison between the transportation and mechanical departments to ensure the transportation department's demand for locomotives and end-of-train (EOT) devices is met by the mechanical department's ability to maintain the equipment.

Hadel also is responsible for implementing a plan to track and maintain EOT devices. Earlier this year, KCS developed a computer program designed to ensure the devices are available to reduce train delays. Hadel will educate KCS and The Texas Mexican Railway Co. employees on EOT care and handling, and stress the Class I's policy that new devices only be assigned to trains on KCS property.

"An EOT is a piece of complex, electronic operating equipment worth about $4,000," said Hadel in a prepared statement. "While they're bulky, they're also delicate and must be handled with care or they will likely fail."
