New York City-based Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has received a $2 million federal grant to fund an automated rail-car inspection system pilot for Metro-North Railroad.
The automated system will enable Metro-North to conduct daily Federal Railroad Administration-mandated rail-car inspections more efficiently, MTA officials said in a press release. An automated system provides early detections of existing and future defects reducing potential repair and replacement time.
The grant was issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grants program.
"With federal funding from SMART, we can explore new industry advancements to improve our maintenance practices, which will enhance the safety and overall reliability of our service," said Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi.
The Metro-North project is one of 34 selected to receive SMART grant funding out of the 321 applications USDOT received.
