The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has announced the Clean Engine Project, a program offering grant funding to repower unregulated or Tier 0 switcher locomotive engines with Tier 3 engines.
Offering a total of $800,000, the program aims to permanently reduce diesel emissions and diesel fuel use, as well as nitrogen oxide emissions, DEQ officials said in a press release. The majority of non-road mobile nitrogen oxide emissions originate from the rail industry in Montana, they said.
The grants, for which applications are due by Jan. 14, 2022, will require at least a 60% match from the applying organizations. The funding will come from the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Settlement as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act.
“Besides vehicles, the railroad sector makes up most NOx emissions in Montana,” said Dan Lloyd, DEQ’s energy bureau chief. “DEQ is excited to offer this funding opportunity, the first of its kind in Montana.”
