Societe de transport de Montreal (STM) just completed a major train order and now has exercised an option to obtain additional trains over the next two years.

The agency recently received the 54th AZUR train from a Bombardier Transportation-Alstom consortium, capping off an order that was placed in October 2010. STM plans to obtain 17 more AZUR trains through a contractual amendment with the consortium.

The trains are slated for delivery between spring 2020 and fall 2021. Funded by the provincial and federal governments, the acquisition of the modern, efficient and more comfortable trains will be a major addition to the agency's 2025 plan for enhanced transit services in the greater Montreal area, STM officials said in a press release.

The addition of the trains — which feature 8 percent more space and better ventilation systems — will enable the agency to considerably improve riders' travel experience, they said. Eventually, 90 percent of the trains running on STM's Green Line will be AZUR models.
