New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and NJ Transit President and CEO Kevin Corbett last week unveiled the agency's new multilevel power rail cars at an event held at NJ Transit’s Meadows Maintenance Complex in Kearny.
The first of their kind in North America, the multilevel cars are electric multiple units (EMUs), which are self-propelled and don’t require a separate locomotive. Electric motors are incorporated within one or several of the vehicles on the train, officials from Murphy’s office said in a press release.
Manufactured by Alstom Transportation Inc. in Plattsburgh, New York, the new cars will replace the 40-year-old single level cars now in use. The new vehicles’ maximum speed will increase to 110 miles per hour and will feature amenities such as USB charging ports and on board information displays.
In December 2018, the NJ Transit's board approved a rail rolling stock vehicle procurement for 113 multilevel rail vehicles to replace current cars. In February 2022, the board approved the purchase of an additional 25 multilevel \ vehicles.
In July, the board approved the purchase of an additional 36 multilevel cars.
