The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (NORTA) last week completed a transition to bring its streetcar operations and maintenance functions in-house.

As of Dec. 20, all streetcar operators and maintenance personnel will be employed by NORTA. The change results in NORTA increasing the number of its employees from 64 to 791.

In May, the agency terminated its contract with Transdev, which had provided transportations management services to the NORTA since 2009.

Transdev’s services played a key role in restoring transit service in the years following Hurricane Katrina, NORTA officials said in a press release.

By directly managing operations, NORTA is better positioned to manage the financial implications resulting from COVID-19, NORTA officials said. Also, they expect to save overhead costs by reducing operational redundancies.
