Rail News: Mechanical
Railpower Technologies Corp. recently announced Norfolk Southern Corp. has purchased two RP-series multi-engine, low-emission kits to convert two yard locomotives. Railpower will deliver the kits later this year.
NS — which retains an option to purchase additional kits — will convert two conventional SW1500 locomotives into model RP14BD, Railpower’s newest switcher. NS’ Thoroughbred Mechanical Services will perform the work at its locomotive shop in Altoona, Pa.
RP14BD is designed to reduce air emissions up to 80 percent and cut fuel usage up to 70 percent compared with a conventional switcher. Including NS’ order, Railpower’s order backlog for the locomotive now stands at 65 units.
