NYCT subway cars begin final journey to Ohio

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that four of New York City Transit's (NYCT) recently retired R-32 subway cars — also known as the Brightliners — will soon be shipped to Ohio.

The cars were carried from South Brooklyn Marine Terminal to the 65th Street Yard via a New York New Jersey Rail (NYNJ) locomotive earlier this week, MTA officials said in a press release. After being disassembled at the rail yard, they will be secured onto Frontier Industrial Corp. flat cars for transport across the Hudson River to Jersey City, New Jersey, where they will travel via CSX freight trains to Ohio.

The Brightliners were the first large fleet of 600 mass-produced, stainless-steel cars for NYCT. They made their first run on Sept. 14, 1964, and their last on Jan. 9.

The cars have been featured in many movies and were a nostalgic favorite for many NYCT subway riders, MTA officials said.
