New York/New Jersey port authority displays design for new PATH cars

Yesterday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey unveiled the design of the new Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) passengers cars.
Under a $499 million contract, Kawasaki Rail Car Inc. is designing and building 340 passenger cars to replace PATH’s current fleet.
To be delivered between 2008 and 2011, the cars will feature three-door sets on each side to hasten loading and unloading; on-board video; closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording capabilities; and improved lighting, air conditioning and heating systems.
The cars are part of a $3.1 billion capital improvement program that also calls for constructing a $2.2 billion World Trade Center Transportation Hub, installing new fare-collection turnstiles, introducing a smart-card system, hiring additional customer service agents, testing and evaluating new signal system technology, and upgrading the CCTV system.
