Palmetto Railways to retrofit two locomotives to battery-electric power

The zero-emission locomotives are expected to help maximize a cleaner and more energy efficient transfer and shipment of goods through Palmetto Railways' existing North Charleston facilities and support the Navy Base Intermodal Facility that's being developed with South Carolina Ports Authority and is under construction.

Palmetto Railways yesterday announced it's partnering with Innovative Rail Technologies (IRT) to convert two diesel switchers to lithium-ion battery-powered locomotives.

The locomotives are expected to be delivered and enter service within two years. A provider of proprietary propulsion technology, IRT will retrofit the locomotives, which will be less expensive to operate, provide superior performance and significantly reduce carbon emissions, Palmetto Railways officials said in a news release.

The switch to battery-powered locomotives is expected to reduce the amount of diesel consumed at the railroad's facilities by an estimated 40,000 gallons annually per locomotive, they said.

The zero-emission locomotives also are expected to help maximize a cleaner and more energy efficient transfer and shipment of goods through Palmetto Railways' existing North Charleston facilities and support the Navy Base Intermodal Facility that's being developed with South Carolina Ports Authority and is under construction.

Late last year, Palmetto Railways obtained a $4.17 million Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to help fund the project. The railroad will provide a 35% funding match.

"[We are] steadfast in our commitment to adopting advanced technologies that not only help to reduce our environmental impact to our neighboring North Charleston communities, but prioritize safety, efficiency and reliable rail service for current and future customers," said Palmetto Railways President and CEO Patrick McCrory.
