Prime Railway to produce car doors in place of shuttered YSD plant

Prime Railway Services recently assumed freight-car door manufacturing operations from now-defunct Youngstown Steel Doors (YSD). Earlier this year, Prime Railway parent Global Railway Industries Ltd. closed YSD Industries (2004) Inc.’s Youngstown, Ohio, plant because of mounting losses. Prime Railway operates a plant in Courtice, Ontario, Canada.

Founded in 1924 as The Youngstown Steel Door Co., YSD produced rail-car doors and sides, hopper-car outlet gates, box-car roofs, auto-rack side screening and roofs, and stamped grating products. Global Railway recently sold YSD’s box-car sliding and plug door, and roof product lines to The Greenbrier Cos., and plastic pellet gate product line to Miner Enterprises Inc.

Prime Railway — which has been providing steel doors to the rail industry for the past 15 years — will maintain YSD part numbers to make it easier for YSD customers to place orders without having to measure their doors.

Global Railway also owns and operates Rafna Industries Ltd., G&B Specialties Inc., and Bach-Simpson Corp., which supply event recorder monitoring/control systems, train speedometers, track and signal components, and rail gear.
