RSI: Rail-car backlog shrank in second quarter

The total rail-car backlog declined from 138,856 units on April 1 to 135,805 units on July 1, according to second-quarter data released by the Railway Supply Institute's American Railway Car Institute Committee. The backlog previously stood at 142,837 units on Dec. 31, 2014, and 124,437 units on Oct. 1, 2014.

Rail-car orders in the second quarter totaled 19,786 units compared with 15,952 units in the first quarter. Orders previously totaled 37,431, 42,900 and 33,912 units in the fourth, third and second quarter of 2014, respectively.

Meanwhile, deliveries totaled 21,567 units in 2Q compared with 19,996 units in 1Q. Last year, deliveries totaled 18,941 units in the fourth quarter, 18,432 units in the third quarter and 16,056 units in the second quarter.
