After registering a pretty good year in the delivery department in 2004, rail-car builders can bank on an even better year in 2005, according to a car delivery forecast recently released by Rail Theory Forecasts. The market analysis and rail industry forecasting firm projects 52,300 cars will be delivered this year — an 18 percent increase compared with 44,300 deliveries in 2004.
Deliveries will include about 9,000 tank cars (compared with 8,600 in 2004), 10,300 grain hoppers (4,800), 4,500 gondolas (4,700) and 5,000 open-top hoppers (2,500) for coal, and 13,000 intermodal wells (13,300).
"The increase in deliveries is due in part to a large backlog of orders that have accumulated from the shortage of cast parts that has persisted since 2003 and a double-digit surge in orders for certain car types, such as intermodal equipment," said Rail Theory Forecasts President and Progressive Railroading columnist Toby Kolstad in a prepared statement.
