Rail News: Mechanical
Rail-car orders and deliveries continued to increase during the first quarter compared with the previous quarter, according to separate reports issued by the American Railway Car Institute Committee (ARCI) of the Railway Supply Institute and Economic Planning Associates Inc (EPA).
ARCI–member companies reported car orders totaling 17,563 units, a 43 percent increase compared with the fourth quarter, but 399 fewer units compared with first-quarter 2004. Orders were driven by increasing demand for aluminum open-top hoppers, aluminum gondolas, and five-unit articulated intermodal and tank cars, ARCI said.
“Rail-car builders continue to maintain their focus and response to the growth in freight and tank car demand within their market as the railroad industry in general continues to play a key role in the North American industrial marketplace,” said ARCI spokesman Tom Simpson in a prepared statement.
Quarterly car deliveries totaling 15,781 units rose 9 percent compared with the fourth quarter and 58 percent compared with first-quarter 2004. The car backlog reached 59,416 units on March 31 compared with 58,677 units on Dec. 31, 2004. Last year, car orders and deliveries totaled 70,626 units and 46,871 units, respectively, ARCI said.
In its quarterly “Outlook for Rail Cars” report, EPA said car builders assembled 15,800 units and received orders for 17,600 units during the first quarter. The car backlog totaled 59,400 on March 31, ensuring that “deliveries this year will be at the highest level since 1999,” EPA said.
Based on current and projected production schedules, existing backlogs and tight rail-car component availability, builders will assemble 61,500 cars and platforms this year and 63,500 cars and platforms in 2006, EPA estimates. Car deliveries are projected to total 60,000 in 2007 and 56,000 in 2008, then rise again to 61,000 by 2010.
“Longer term, replacement pressures will be mounting among the steel-bodied coal car, box car, mid-sized and small-cube covered hopper, and multi-level flat car fleets,” EPA said in its report. “Good growth in customer markets will propel demand for centerbeams, high-cube covered hoppers, tank cars, intermodal equipment and coal cars.”
