Rail News: Mechanical
Railpower Technologies Corp. is recalling 59 Green Goat and Green Kid switchers (Generation I, II and III models) and asking customers to temporarily stop operating the locomotives after a fire occurred in a Green Goat Generation I model on May 30.
The company is investigating the cause of the fire in the GG Series unit — Railpower’s initial model series. The locomotive builder plans to install a new version of software for battery pack monitoring and make mechanical improvements to prevent fires.
“Our goal is to ensure the safety of our customers and their ability to return to normal operations as rapidly as possible,” said Railpower President and Chief Executive Officer José Mathieu in a prepared statement.
The company currently produces RP-Series road switchers — a two-engine hybrid and three-engine diesel model — that were introduced last year. Railpower officials estimate the RP-Series’ North American market potential at 6,000 units.
