Railroad doing its part to reduce air pollution, CPR says

In honor of Earth Day, Canadian Pacific Railway recently reviewed the measures it’s taken during the past few years to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Class I has acquired high-powered, energy-efficient AC-traction locomotives; purchased 35 hybrid battery powered Green Goat@ switchers; increased the use of distributed power; and outfitted locomotives with fuel-saving devices, such as stop/start systems.

The railroad also changed operating practices and restructured its network to save fuel, lubricated track to reduce friction between wheels and rail, and forged co-production/directional running agreements with other railroads to reduce the number of trains operating in a region.

“The transportation sector produces one-quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, but rail produces less than 4 percent of the transportation sector's environmental air emissions while hauling more than 60 percent of Canada's goods," said CPR Senior Vice President of Operations Neal Foot in a prepared statement. "CPR is continuing to explore more technology to make our operations even greener."
